La Jolla Information

La Jolla is located in Coastal San Diego. It’s reputation is that it’s one of the most prestigious areas of San Diego with some of the most expensive real estate in all of San Diego County. Many of the homes sit high on the hillsides and overlook one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in all of California. The coastline of La Jolla is about 7 miles in length with beautiful sandy beach and rocky outcroppings. With average yearly temperatures at right about 70 degrees with a nice coastal breeze you can see why so many people love to visit, vacation and live in this area. La Jolla ZIP Code is 92037.

The name that the Kumeyaay Native Americans called the area was the “land of holes” or “mat kulaaxuuy” in their native tongue. So it is theorized that the Spanish settlers translated the “land of holes” to La Jolla. Some think, although not widely agreed upon, that the Spanish Settlers used the Spanish word “Jewel” which is “la joya” and came up with the name La Jolla. I’ve also heard for many years that La Jolla was from the Spanish word for Jewell and was how La Jolla got its name but apparently this is not the widely held belief. I guess land of holes it is, but how La Jolla looked then and how it looks now is very different. I would say that today’s modern day La Jolla is truly a jewel.

When La Jolla was part of Mexico it showed up on the map as pueblo land. The area became part of California in 1850 and became part of San Diego. In the 1890’s the railway came to town and along with it came the tourist industry. Some of the old landmarks are still around to this day. It wasn’t long after that the real estate speculators to divide up the land and build homes. Bishops School was opened in 1909.

Ellen Browning Scripps settled in La Jolla and was a wealthy journalist in her own right and also from inheriting family money. She was instrumental in making La Jolla what it is today. Her time and her money were dedicated to making La Jolla the fabulous community it is. The United State Marines had a base in La Jolla from 1917 to 1964 and it was named Camp Mathews. It’s now the site of UCSD, University of California, San Diego. In 1960 La Jolla had over 17,000 people living there and today, there are over 40,000 people residing in La Jolla.
